Biblioteca Hertziana, Max Planck Institute for Art History

The Bibliotheca Hertziana - Max Planck Institute for Art History promotes research in the field of Italian and global history of art and architecture. Born from a private foundation by Henriette Hertz (1846–1913), it was inaugurated in 1913 as a research center for the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft. Today the Bibliotheca Hertziana is part of the institutes of the humanities sector of the Max Planck Society and is considered one of the most renowned research institutes in the world for art history. The appointment of current directors Tanja Michalsky and Tristan Weddigen has led to an expansion of the research areas of the institute, both from a methodological, historical and geographical point of view. The research activities promoted by the Michalsky Department - City and Space in the Middle Ages and in the Modern Age are aimed at the geographical area of Southern Italy, in particular the city and Kingdom of Naples, and the Mediterranean basin. At the center of interests is the historical understanding of the space between the Middle Ages and the Modern Age (Historical spaces in texts and geographical maps).

The Weddigen Department - History of modern art in a global context aims above all to connect Italian art from the early modern age to the contemporary and to deepen the history of science. The Rome Contemporary research initiative proposes to re-evaluate the important contribution of the Roman art scene to the history of the XX and XXI centuries. The Visualizing Science in Media Revolutions research group, led by Sietske Fransen, Ph.D., investigates how the representation of scientific images has been influenced by media revolutions and the invention of new tools and techniques. The institute also promotes research into the history and iconology of media and artistic materials from the Middle Ages to the present day. Bibliotheca Hertziana has launched a process of digitization and interconnection of research infrastructures that involves all the departments of the institute (Digital Humanities Lab).
