The Collio was inhabited in its south-western part already in prehistoric times and the discovery of walls and coins at San Floriano confirm a subsequent settlement of Roman origin. The first known document in which the locality of San Floriano appears is from 1170, this document concerns contracts for the sale of lots of land, vineyards and houses between the abbess Irmilint of the Monastery of S. Maria di Aquileia and the inhabitants of San Floriano.
The castle that was built to defend the town was part of a larger imperial defensive system that had Gorizia, Gradisca as its cornerstones and then continued on the Collio with the castles of Quisca, San Martino, Castel Dobra etc. In 1520 Vinciguerra Formentini di Cividale bought the castle which until then had belonged to the Ungrispach. After the purchase the manor was restored and to perpetuate the memory of these works a plaque, still existing, was walled up on the north facade.
