Villa Rosebery is a monumental complex, one of the main landmarks of neoclassicism in Naples. The villa was built as a royal residence; it is located in the Posillipo district and is one of the three official residences of the President of the Italian Republic and for this reason it cannot be visited, except at certain times of the year. It has an area of ??66,056 square meters.
The villa owes its origin to the initiative of the Austrian officer Joseph Von Thurn, who from 1801 bought some land in a pleasant position on Capo Posillipo to erect a country residence surrounded by a garden, as well as by large orchards and vineyards.
The property was later purchased by the princess of Gerace and her son, Agostino Serra di Oristano, who converted it into a representative villa.
Thanks to the contribution of the architects Stefano and Luigi Gasse, the villa was transformed into an elegant residence and the pertinent houses (the large and small Foresteria) were also renovated.
From June 1944, during the lieutenancy of his son Umberto, Vittorio Emanuele III and Queen Elena moved to Villa Maria Pia.
The royal couple lived in the Neapolitan residence until Vittorio Emanuele III signed the abdication deed in favor of his son Umberto on 9 May 1946 before leaving for exile.
Provisionally requisitioned by the Allies, the villa took the name of Villa Rosebery and was first granted to the Air Force Academy, and then, starting from 1957, it became one of the residences supplied to the President of the Italian Republic.
In 2021, at the behest of President Sergio Mattarella, as part of the "Quirinale Contemporanea" initiative, a work of contemporary Italian design was also placed in the garden of Villa Rosebery: these are the Pistillo lamps by Emiliana Martinelli.
