Asinaria Gate (Porta Asinaria) is a gate of the Aurelian Walls of Rome, a few meters away from Porta San Giovanni. It dates back to the period of the construction of the walls, built between 270 and 273 by the emperor Aureliano.
Although scholars disagree on the era of the transformation of the door from a simple third-rate opening to a monumental access, they agree instead that very soon it was realized that the entire area between the Porta Metronia and the Prenestina -Labicana (now Porta Maggiore) was not safe enough.
The cylindrical towers on the sides of the fornix were therefore erected, about 20 meters high, still perfectly preserved, and the travertine cladding still visible on the external side and the opening of the windows for the ballistae were provided.
