The Monumental Tombs and the Madonna del Parto Church

The tombs are located inside a regional park called "Antichissima Citta Di Sutri" where it is possible to visit other monuments, walk along the paths of the Via Francigena (In the Middle Ages Sutri was an important station for pilgrims before arriving in their final destination Rome) and spend a relaxing day surrounded by nature with picnic areas.

The tombs dug into the tuff are of mixed rite, that is, they have small niches for the cineraries and niches for the deposition of the intact.

The small rock church stands on a 3rd century Roman mithraeum. AD in turn set on an Etruscan tomb. The Mithraeum was an underground place of worship where the cult of Mithraism was practiced, an ancient Hellenistic religion based on the cult of the God Meithra.

Over the centuries, the structure has kept intact some characteristics of the Mithraic cult such as poor lighting, but the transformation into a church in 380 AD and then in the 13th led to a modification with the addition of an entrance and an apse where a fresco of the Nativity.
