Galliate

Galliate is about 7 km from the center of Novara. From the last building in Galliate to the first building in Pernate (fraction of Novara), there are only about 400/500 meters. It is about 45 km from Milan and 100 km from Turin. The municipality is located on the edge of the Ticino valley and is included in the Ticino Valley natural park. The center of Galliate is circumscribed by a set of tree-lined avenues, which are 5 in all. The first is Viale Leonardo da Vinci, which starts from Piazza San Giuseppe, near the aqueduct, and arrives near the beginning of Via Varallino . The second is Viale Beato Quagliotti, which was born near the intersection of Viale Leonardo da Vinci and Via Varallino and ends near the Church of Sant'Antonio, at the point where Via Antonio Gramsci enters.

After the Church of Sant'Antonio it takes the name of Viale Dante Alighieri, which ends when the avenue becomes Via Novara. The fourth avenue is Viale Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour, also known as "the viale delle poste", although the post offices are located in Via Giulio Pastore, a very short side street of the avenue. The fifth and last avenue is Viale Teresa Orelli, the shortest, which then ends in Piazza San Gaudenzio where the road leading to Cameri starts. The toponym suffix "-ate" indicates a probable Celtic origin. The first significant allocations date back to the Late Bronze Age (12th-10th century BC); in Roman times its territory, permanently inhabited, was affected by the centuriation. There are numerous archaeological finds found in different areas surrounding the town, testimony of those who found themselves inhabiting these lands and who left traces of their passage here. In a large area located north of the town, objects dating back to the period between the Iron Age and the Roman age were found.

The name Galeatum appears for the first time in a document dating back to around 840 AD. The first housing nucleus (later called Galliate Vecchio) was established in the Scaglia region, close to a road that followed the ancient path of the Roman cardo maximus. Here a castle was built (of which no traces remain), the castrum granted in 911 AD. by Berengario I as a defense against the incursions of the Hungarians.
