Cala d'Oliva

Cala d'Oliva is a town located on the Asinara island, in the municipality of Porto Torres. It is a tourist attraction for visitors to the Asinara National Park. The watchtower of Cala d'Oliva, together with those of Cala d'Arena and Trabuccato, dates back to the 17th century, by the Aragonese. On June 22, 1885 the Depretis VII government, which the same year had decreed that the whole island was publicly owned, established a penal colony in Cala d'Oliva. Since then, the country has no longer permanent residents, but currently only houses seasonal workers, foresters and tourists, who are staying in the former barracks converted into a hostel-guesthouse.

In the summer of 1985, following rumors about a possible attack, the judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino were transferred to Capo d'Oliva, who in a month's work wrote the preliminary investigation of the Palermo maxiprocess against the mafia. At the end of their stay, the two magistrates had to reimburse the State for the cost of their "vacation" and their family members, equal to 10,000 lire at the time (about € 12.90) per day per person. In 2016 the film Era d'estate was shot, which tells the work of the two judges during that summer in this place.

In June 2017, the Observatory of Memory museum was inaugurated inside the former Central Branch of Cala d'Oliva, which once housed the most deserving prisoners of the Asinara prison. A short distance away is the cell-bunker which in the past was set up for the detention of Totò Riina; this last structure, once nicknamed by the fishermen as "The disco" because it is illuminated every night for safety reasons with high beam headlights visible from miles away, was restored in 2015 by Libera. Associations, names and numbers against the mafias, which has created an exhibition space. In the old barracks a few meters from the central branch there is the hostel which is the only structure to stay overnight on the island.
