Grand Canal of Venice

The Grand Canal is the main canal that crosses the historic center of Venice. About 3800 meters long (width from 30 to 70 m, average depth 5 m), it divides the historic center into two parts, tracing an inverted "S", which goes from the connection of the Ponte della Libertà to the San Marco Basin. the length of magnificent buildings, in most of the centuries between the twelfth and eighteenth centuries, which manifest the well-being and art created by the Republic of Venice, making it one of the symbols of the city, every year the Venetians relive centuries-old traditions of the Serenissima Republic, like the Historical Regatta.

After a short stretch in a south-easterly direction, at the height of the Ponte della Costituzione turned north-east, to then describe a large loop, along which are the Ponte degli Scalzi and the confluence of the Canale di Cannaregio, which ends to the Rialto Bridge, the only ancient of the 4 pedestrian bridges over the canal and as famous as the canal itself. From here it continues south-west and then south (after the "vault de Canal") and finally east, from the Accademia Bridge to the Punta della Dogana. In this route it touches five of the six districts, collects 45 minor rivers and is crossed by seven bridges (four pedestrian, two automotive and one railway). The most recent is the Ponte della Costituzione, designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava to connect the square of the Venice Santa Lucia station with Piazzale Roma, the terminus of the automobile lines and the tramway of the Venice Transport Consortium.

River around which the city was born, vital center of the Serenissima trade for the whole Middle Ages, the Grand Canal was the most sought-after seat of the representative palaces of the patrician families, the place to enhance their wealth, «the true Book of 'gold' in which to stand out. There are at least 170 residences that can still tell a thousand years of splendor of the Republic, in the history of the families who lived there and in the succession of architecture, always influenced by a particular Venetian taste. It can be said that, with this "tender" to the most beautiful palace, Venice has given body in the Grand Canal to the pride of its identity and to the deep bond with the lagoon. To these architectures are added some churches, schools and fields; very few to drive along it on foot.
