Istituto Storico Germanico

The German Historical Institute in Rome, short DHI in Rome, is the oldest of the German historical institutes abroad. Its purpose is to conduct research in the history of Italy and Germany and to investigate Italian-German relations in particular in a broader international context, from the Middle Ages to the present day. The "Deutsche Historische Institut in Rom", Rome's short DHI, was founded as a "Prussian historical station" in 1888 after the opening of the Vatican Secret Archive. It carries out historical basic research, promotes young academics and is a service structure. As such, Rome's DHI supports German scientists and institutions in their relevant research and promotes the cooperation of German, Italian and international historians.

In 1960 a music history department was created at the institute, working on the musical cultures of Germany and Italy and their relationships in the history of music in Europe. Traditionally, guests, scholarship recipients and researchers from the German Historical Institute in Rome work in the Vatican Secret Archive and in the Vatican Library. Since the 1960s, they have increasingly focused on further archives and libraries of churches and state located in Rome. The director sides with an academic advisory committee. Rome's DHI has been included in the Max Weber Stiftung - Deutsche Geisteswissenschaftliche Institute im Ausland (Max Weber Foundation - German Humanities Institutes Abroad) (founded in 2002 in Bonn), together with other humanities of the Federal Republic of Germany.
