Institut français, Center Saint-Louis

The Institut français - Center Saint-Louis (so called since 2012) is a French cultural institution dependent on the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs. Founded in 1945, it is located in Rome and depends on the French Embassy to the Holy See. It represents contemporary French culture, encourages the spread of language and culture in all its diversity.

In 1945, in the post-war context, the philosopher Jacques Maritain, then ambassador of France to the Holy See, decided to found the Center d'Etudes Saint-Louis de France to provide the Embassy with a cultural service within the Vatican. The Center was located in a wing of the Palais Saint-Louis, built on land that was ceded to the French by Sixtus IV and managed by the Pious Plants of France in Rome and Loreto. Gradually, the cultural activities of the Saint-Louis Cultural Center in France diversified, in particular with the closure of the Cultural Center of the French Embassy in Italy, known as the Campitelli Center, in 1995. From then on, Centro Saint-Louis in France became the only French cultural center in Rome, together with the Académie de France and the cultural services of the French Institute of Italy. In 2005, the merger of the French Alliance of Rome with the Saint-Louis Cultural Center in France intensified the educational offer.
