PAN, Polish Academy of Sciences

The Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), founded in 1952, is considered the most prestigious scientific institution in Poland which operates through a society elected by the most eminent scientists and scientific institutions. The highest organ of the Academy is the General Assembly, which brings together scholars with the greatest scientific results and the highest authority; elects its executive bodies (the Presidium and the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences) from the members of the National Academy.

The Academy's corporate structure comprises seven departments that bring together members representing related scientific disciplines, seven field departments that perform the tasks of the Polish Academy of Sciences in individual regions of the country and 109 scientific and problematic committees that integrate scientists and researchers from the Polish Academy of Sciences and other academic circles. The scientific committees oversee the development of their knowledge discipline and the development of research in the field of specific interdisciplinary problems, prepare expert opinions, work on the dissemination of research results, initiate international cooperation with research centers of similar profile. The faculties coordinate and evaluate the activities of scientific institutions that fall within their field of activity.

Scientific research, which is a statutory task of the Polish Academy of Sciences, is carried out in almost eighty scientific institutions: research institutes, archives, libraries, museums and foreign stations of the Polish Academy of Sciences (in Paris, Rome, Vienna, Berlin , Brussels, Moscow and Kiev). The basis for international cooperation and scientific exchange are bilateral cooperation agreements, as well as the accession of the Polish Academy of Sciences to over one hundred international scientific organizations worldwide. Information on the current activities of the Polish Academy of Sciences is published in the ACADEMIA quarter, published in Polish and English. In addition, several hundred scientific publications appear every year at the Academy, in its structures and committees, of which magazines and editorial series represent almost half. The educational activities are also carried out in the context of complementary courses, postgraduate, doctorate and numerous specialists.
