Accademia di Francia

The Accademia di Francia in Rome is a French artistic institution located in Rome in Villa Medici, on the Pincio hill, which welcomes artists and researchers in residence to allow them to carry out their research projects. The French Academy in Rome also offers a rich cultural program, organizing exhibitions, concerts, screenings, literary meetings and conferences, often in collaboration with scholarship holders or former scholarship holders. It also takes care of conserving and making known Villa Medici and its gardens, open to the public every day (except Mondays) through guided tours.

Founded in 1666 by Colbert, the Académie de France à Rome was created to welcome the winners of the Prix de Rome and the artists protected by the great French nobles, who could complete their training in contact with Rome and Italy. At the time, their stays lasted from three to five years, depending on the disciplines. The French Academy in Rome had its headquarters first on the Janiculum Hill and then at Palazzo Mancini, in Via del Corso, until 1799, when the seat was occupied and the furnishings were dispersed.

In 1803 Napoleon moved the Academy to Villa Medici, with the intention of safeguarding an institution already threatened by the revolution, allowing young artists to continue discovering and learning about the masterpieces of antiquity and the Renaissance and to draw inspiration from them for their "envois de Rome", the annual essays which, sent and judged in Paris, constituted mandatory exercises for all pensionnaires.
