Brusasco Castle

The Brusasco Castle was built around the year 1000 by the Marquis of Friuli and King of Italy Berengario. The insecurity of the Borgo Brusasco, subjected to continuous military raids and frequent flooding of the Po, since it is located near the confluence of the Dora Baltea with the river , prompted the population to take refuge on the surrounding hill.

This is the origin of the "Place" (from the Latin lucus, sacred wood) that is the Brusasco hill on which, in 891, by order of the Marquis of Friuli Berengario, then king of Italy, the first nucleus of the castle was built . According to scholars, the first lords of Brusasco were the marquises of Ivrea who would then have donated it to the bishop of Vercelli.

Other sources suggest instead that the castle passed to the Novalesa Abbey in 998. In any case, before the year 1000 it reached the Aleramici, Marquesses of Monferrato, and from then on it followed the complex historical events of Monferrato.
