St Michael's Mount (in Cornish language: Karrek Loos y'n Koos; 0.23 km²) is a tidal island located in the so-called Mount's Bay, at the western end of Cornwall (south-west England), opposite the town of Marazion . Administratively, it is a civil parish in the district of Penwith.
The island is famous for its vague resemblance (not just in name) to the Mont Saint-Michel of Normandy (France).
The resemblance is not at all accidental: this place is also dedicated to the archangel Michael, who according to legend appeared there in 495 and to whom some Benedictines, coming from Mont Saint-Michel, wanted dedicate an abbey on site, an abbey (of which only the refectory and the church remain) later replaced during the 16th century by the fortress which can still be admired today.
It is thought that the saint decided to appear on the two islands of the same name because they perfectly symbolized the relationship between God and man: the mainland and the islands are in fact periodically united and divided by the tide in analogy to the good and evil that unite or divide God and humanity.
