Patriarchate of Venice

The Palazzo Patriarcale, in Venice, is the seat of the diocesan curia of the Patriarchate of Venice. It stands in Piazza San Marco, next to the Marciana basilica, and overlooks the Piazzetta dei Leoncini.

The territory extends for 871 km² on the metropolitan city of central Venice, including entirely the municipalities of Mira, Venice, Quarto d'Altino, Cavallino-Treporti, Jesolo, Eraclea and most of that of Caorle.

To these is added a very small portion of the municipality of Mirano (some streets southeast of the town belonging to the parish of Marano Veneziano, in the vicariate of Mira / Gambarare), part of the municipality of San Donà di Piave (Cittanova hamlet, with its own town) , while the island of Pellestrina of Venice (four parishes in the diocese of Chioggia), the locality Ca 'Nani of Jesolo (dependent on the parish of Santa Maria di Piave, in the diocese of Treviso) and the hamlets San Giorgio di Livenza are excluded. , Brussa and Castello di Brussa, in the municipality of Caorle (with its own parishes, the first of which in the diocese of Vittorio Veneto and the other two in the diocese of Concordia-Pordenone).

Patriarchal seat is the city of Venice, where the cathedral basilica of San Marco is located. The basilica of San Pietro di Castello, formerly the cathedral of the diocese of Castello, was the cathedral of the patriarchate until 1807. The patriarchate comprises 129 parishes in the metropolitan city of Venice divided into 9 vicariates. From 1818 to 1968 there was also a forcania of Torcello, including the territories of the suppressed diocese of Torcello, or the parishes of Torcello, San Magno di Tre Palade, San Michele del Quarto, San Giovanni Battista di Jesolo, Santa Maria di Jesolo, Santa Maria Elisabetta del Cavallino, Holy Trinity of Treporti, San Martino di Burano, Santa Caterina di Mazzorbo, Santa Maria and Donato di Murano and San Pietro di Murano. It was replaced by the Vicariate of the Estuary, based in Burano, then integrated in the Vicariate of Cannaregio-Estuario.

The title dates back to 8 October 1451 and is heir to the ancient patriarchate of Grado. The latter was established in 606 following the schism that divides the patriarchate of Aquileia: the territory was then divided into the two seats of Grado, pro-Roman, and Cormons, schismatic. After the reconstruction of the schism (699), the patriarchate of Grado remained independent and the numerous dioceses of Venetia maritima were recognized as suffragan (i.e. the coast between the Venetian Lagoon and Istria, then Byzantine domains).
