Vicari Castle

The historic center of Lari has the appearance of the classic village built around a fortification, namely the Castello dei Vicari. The fortification of this inhabited area - whose origin dates back to the Etruscans - dates back to the Lombard period. At that time Lari had long been a very important center, located on the lines that connect the main centers of north-western Tuscany: today's Pisa, Lucca and Livorno.

Walking through its narrow streets, keep your eyes peeled: almost everywhere you will find very suggestive views. And if you are lucky - as we have been - you will also find some inhabitants willing to tell you some anecdote! The Castello dei Vicari is located right at the top of the town of Lari and from its external walkways you can admire a breathtaking panorama. Tradition has it that the castle stands on the ruins of a Lombard fortress. In any case, the core of the current castle dates back to the thirteenth century, when the Pisans took control of the village. Most of the parts visible today are instead dating back to the Medici domination.

After years of neglect, starting from the 90s, Castello dei Vicari has returned to being open to visitors and regularly hosts cultural events and initiatives. Just at the foot of the castle are the laboratory and the sales point of the Pastificio Martelli, famous for its high quality artisan pasta.
