Toiano

We are in Toiano, in the province of Pisa, now a favorite destination for tourists, photographers and paranormal hunters who find everything they are looking for, from the splendid panorama of the Pisan hills, to the mysterious facts that seem to "manifest" there. Toiano rises between Palaia and Volterra, and its origins date back to the early Middle Ages, as evidenced by the castle structure which is accessed via a bridge, perhaps in the past a drawbridge.

In the past, the town was under the dominion of Lucca, then passed to the Pisans. Subsequently in 1362 under the Florentine hegemony. In 1364 Toiano ("Toiano Vecchio") was destroyed by the Florentines and then returned again to the Pisans, who rebuilt it ("Toiano Nuovo"). In 1406 after the countless passages the Pisans surrendered once again to the Florentine dominion. After centuries of experience, this ancient jewel was slowly uninhabited due to the new industrializations that began to form in the 1960s. This led the Toianese to move to the big cities.

Another "Achilles heel" was its position, surrounded by 40/50 meters high tuff spurs, arid land that rain and wind made incolivable. Currently only one family lives in Toiano, but in the nineteenth century this picturesque piece of history had over 500 inhabitants. Everything remains here, from the old cemetery to the splendid abandoned church, even the old houses remain motionless and allow themselves to be crumbled by time which, as always, does not discount anyone.
