Iglesias

During the centuries of Spanish domination it was one of the royal cities of Sardinia. It is a bishopric (diocese of Iglesias), historical heir of the ancient diocese of Sulcis. It is located 200 m above sea level and is about 8 km from the coast.

In the Middle Ages the city was known in Latin as Villa Ecclesiae, in ancient Pisan as Villa di Chiesa, in Catalan Viladesgleyes or Vila d'Esgleyes and then in Spanish as Iglesias. The oldest mention of the toponym Villa Ecclesiae is contained in a document preserved in the cathedral of San Lorenzo in Genoa, dating back to 1272.

The area where today's city of Iglesias stands was already frequented in prehistoric times: the oldest traces of human settlement date back to the ancient Neolithic; the hypogean tombs, called domus de janas, discovered in the mountainous area of San Benedetto, are attributable to the culture of Ozieri (4th millennium BC).
