Villafranca Veneto

Villafranca is 15 kilometers southwest of Verona. It is in an intermediate position between its provincial capital and the city of Mantua. In its southwest part it is crossed by the river Tione dei Monti, which then flows into Tartarus in the territory of the municipality of Povegliano Veronese.

It belongs to the Veronese high plain, which represents what remains of the cone of the Adige. The glacial moraines settled on a large part of the conoid. In the Villafranchese area the plain has an almost uniform slope from north to south and from west to east. It is a very permeable gravelly-sandy plain but with an abundant aquifer all year round. Considering the characteristics of the soil, it is possible to hypothesize that in the Middle Ages the waters tended to emerge, hence the need for the excavation of ditches and interventions for regulating the riverbed of the Tione dei Monti.

The toponym derives from its founding characteristic of release from tax charges from which Burgus Liber, then Villa then frees Villafranca. The "Verona" postfix was added after the merger with the Kingdom of Italy (precisely by law decree of 11 August 1867) to distinguish it from other homonymous towns.
