Conegliano

The territory of Conegliano is located at the foot of the Prosecco hills that precede the Belluno Prealps, in an intermediate position between the Veneto-Friuli plain and the mountains. It is located almost halfway between Treviso (to whose province it belongs) and Belluno, both easily accessible thanks to the A27 motorway.

The area, halfway between the mountain and the plain and a point of passage to reach Friuli, has always been a strategic site. Around the tenth century a fortress was built controlled by the bishops of Belluno, but of probable Roman origins. The same toponym seems to derive from the Latin cuniculus indicating the underground passages of the castle.

For centuries, Conegliano hosted a thriving Jewish community: the presence of Jews has been attested since the end of the fourteenth century. Conegliano, a dynamic city from an economic point of view, but also at the center of wars, looting and famine, often had to face serious crises that were resolved with the establishment of loan banks. After a period of freedom and tolerance, the Jewish families were forced, in 1629, to settle in the Siletto area (the current Via Beato Ongaro) and in 1675 in the Ruio district (the current Via Caronelli), outside the city walls.
