Maniago

The town is known for its manufacturing art, which gives Maniago the name of the city of the knife: there are many cutlery shops, planted by hand, starting from the medieval age. Since the fifteenth century, the skilled Maniaghesi knife makers forged knives and blades, which also supplied the troops of the Serenissima Republic. In 1998 the Museum of building art and cutlery was opened to the public.

The proper name "Maniago" was born as a toponym in Roman times, as evidenced by some archaeological finds found in the area. Its origin was traced back to the Latin language, with the addition of the Celtic suffix -aco and derives, according to scholars, from the land of Manilius.

Maniago is located in the western part of Friuli Venezia Giulia, at the mouth of 2 valleys, of the Pordenone foothills: Val Cellina and Val Còlvera, about 70 km from the Adriatic Sea. Its urban center rises at an altitude of 283 m a.s.l., in the zone of confluence between the Cellina and Còlvera streams, which crosses the Maniago area.
