Ancient village of Ozzano Monferrato

Discovery of a village that has maintained over the centuries an uncontaminated historic center in which the conformation of medieval origin is easily readable where artistic, architectural and natural emergencies shine that make it a small jewel in the heart of Monferrato Casalese.

Ozzano is mentioned for the first time in the acts of S.Evasio who, pursued by the Arians, finds refuge here. The feudal history is linked to the figures of the Bishops of Vercelli and the Marquises of Monferrato.

In 1521 the fiefdom was bought by Mercurino Arborio Gattinara, great chancellor of the Emperor Charles V, some notable frescoes in the Gothic-Renaissance parish church are probably linked to this commission. Evidence of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries are traces of the ancient walls, a curtain tower and the Bonaria house, a very rare house of the fifteenth century. The current arrangement of Santa Maria Assunta which preserves valuable altarpieces dates back to the Baroque period.

The gardens of Villa Barbano and those of the Castle (centuries-old cedar of Lebanon), now owned by Visconti, are nineteenth-century. The church of San Giovanni Battista, surrounded by greenery, is neo-Gothic. The town has an important mining and industrial history linked to lime and cement, notable are the emergencies of industrial archeology (Reg. Fontanola).

In 2015 Ozzano is among the 9 municipalities included in the Core Zone of the UNESCO site "The wine landscapes of Piedmont" component "Il Monferrato degli Infernot".
