Castelfranco Emilia

Before 1929, the city belonged to the province of Bologna. This cultural link is still present, both for the spoken dialect, which is part of the western rustic Bolognese dialects, and for belonging to the Bolognese diocese. The surface of the municipality turns out to be very large compared to the average of the surrounding municipalities: this is given by the decision, taken in 1861, to merge the territory of Piumazzo in Castelfranco Emilia, up to that moment a separate municipality in the province of Bologna.

Castelfranco Emilia rises in the Po valley, between Bologna and Modena. The municipal area appears to be very rich in water, in particular the phenomenon of resurgences is widespread. The historic center was built along the main route that cuts the town in half: the Via Emilia. Since the early nineties, the country has experienced rapid population growth which has led to an expansion of the urban agglomeration in a southerly direction, as the northern area is limited by the passage of the railway axis. The vast municipal area is characterized by an intensely cultivated countryside. There are modest sized wooded areas: Bosco Albergati and Villa Sorra. Among the species that host the fresh waters of Castelfranco there is the bleak (Alburnus arborella).

In Roman times the area was known for the marshy lands. A center stood near Via Aemilia, in the district of the more central Mutina, called Forum Gallorum. During the Modena war of 44-43 BC the conformation of the territory made it preferable to use it as a theater of war, as a battle took place between Antonio and the consuls Irzio and Pansa. They give news of the center of Forum Gallorum Cicero in the Letters to their families and Appiano in the Bella Civilia.
