Riccione

The municipality, until 1922 part of Rimini, extends along the Emilia-Romagna coastal strip and is located in a transition area between the last southern sectors of the Po Valley and the first hills of the Romagna hinterland. Inside, two streams flow and flow, the Rio Melo and the Marano.

Riccione's climate is similar to that of the plain (sub-continental temperate) with marine and hilly influences. In the municipality there is a meteorological station managed by the Emilia-Romagna Regional Prevention and Environment Agency for the short and long term monitoring of the main atmospheric and environmental parameters.

The origin of the toponym "Riccione" is controversial: for some historians it derives from the Latin botanical name "arcion, -i", that is mullein (a herbaceous plant widespread in the municipal area), while for others from "Arctium lappa", an asteracea spinescent still found in the parts of the beach not occupied by the bathing establishments and which once had to be much more common. The name of the lappa would be of Greek origin ("archeion") and the combination would go back to the Byzantine occupation of the 6th century AD. The current name refers to the combination with the Italian "hedgehog".
