Cento

Cento is often called the borderland because, despite being in the province of Ferrara, it is 25 km from Bologna, 32 from Ferrara and 38 from Modena. There have been several discussions to change the province without ever materializing the idea. Together with the nearby Pieve di Cento it constitutes a single urban agglomeration of over 43000 inhabitants. Cento is also sometimes renamed "Little Bologna" because of the structure of the arcades and the historical center, in the Bolognese style, and for its gastronomy, which presents numerous typical dishes of the capital of Emilia-Romagna.

Cento has a totally flat, agricultural territory, rich in streams and waste paper (small ponds, heritage of the cultivation of hemp) that insinuates itself like a wedge between the provinces of Bologna and Modena. The city is 33 kilometers from the historic center of Bologna, 35 from the historic center of Ferrara and 38 from the historic center of Modena.

There are various hypotheses on the origin of the name Cento: the most accredited one traces it back to Roman times, from Centum, since at the time the territories were divided into land-based centurias, or, always dating back to the era of Roman rule, from "Cento iugeri ", which would be the portion of territory assigned to the colonists at the time. Another hypothesis is of Lombard origin, from "Centenario", a sort of judge who exercised jurisdiction on behalf of the Duke of Persiceta. Another hypothesis is that the name of the town derives from the Castle of Cento, whose name would have been given by the Celts, calling it Celto, then crippled in Cento.
