Imperia

Imperia was created on October 21, 1923 with a royal decree that brought together eleven pre-existing municipalities in a single municipality, which took its name from the Impero torrent that flows between the two main centers (to get around parochial disputes over the choice of the name itself). From 1973 to 1 January 2009 it was the administrative seat of the Mountain Community of the Olive Tree, the latter merged into the Mountain Community of the Olive Tree and Upper Arroscia Valley with the Regional Law No. 24 of July 4, 2008.

The dialect of Imperia is mainly the Ligurian language, with slight but sensitive variants of terminology and pronunciation between the districts of Porto Maurizio and Oneglia, where the centuries-old Piedmontese domination has left traces also in the cadence and in the lexicon. Starting from the Sixties, with the spread of internal immigration (mainly from Southern Italy), the use of dialect was first "watered down" with many Italian terms, then it was greatly reduced, remaining confined in the city, among the population older, and in small fractions, more culturally homogeneous.

Historically Oneglia is dedicated to the food industry (especially oil and pasta), while Porto Maurizio to fishing and tourism. In recent years, a process of conversion has started in the service industry, starting with the construction of the marina.
