Fontainemore

According to a legend, in 543 the monk San Maurizio reached a small village in the Valle del Lys coming from Oropa through the Col de la Balme. From the stone on which he sat on the village square, water gushed. He then urged the population to build a chapel to be dedicated to Sant'Antonio abate, which was finished in the seventh century. In memory of this event, the town was called "Fontaine-Maure" (from the French, lit. "Fontana Maura").

The chapel of Sant'Antonio became the place of worship for the local population, where a priest went to a nearby village once a week to celebrate mass. In 1732, the parish of Perloz was established, and that of Fontainemore was part of it until September 29, 1483, when the insistent requests of the population were accepted. Nonetheless, the parish of Fontainemore became independent of that of Perloz only in 1693.

The lordship of Vallaise, the second noble Aosta Valley family in importance after that of Challant, appeared in the Lys valley for the first time in the twelfth century, and remained there until the eighteenth century, exercising administrative and legal authority. Numerous documents indicate Fontainemore as the capital of the judicial district of the Vallaise for more than 155 years (from 1592 to 1777). Hearings took place in Colombit village, where sentences were also pronounced.
