Cogne

The municipality of Cogne occupies the upper valley of the same name, is the largest municipality in the Valle d'Aosta and is the 19th highest place in Italy. Cogne is 140 km from Turin, 160 from Geneva and 26.5 km from Aosta.

At the center of the municipal area and on the edge of the town of Veulla is the wide expanse called Prati di Sant'Orso (fr., Prés de Saint-Ours), awarded the "Wonder of Italy" award. The meadows host the bataille des reines, the traditional clash between the cows of the valley, and the area is forbidden to build according to the municipal statute.

The climate of Cogne is alpine with long winters and short summers. From a rainfall point of view, the Valle di Cogne, as indeed the whole of the Valle d'Aosta has a dry climate, as defined by the abbot Pierre-Louis Vescoz who spoke of an intramontane climate. If the national rainfall average is about 1,500 mm, in Cogne we can settle between values between 700 and 800 mm. The areas most exposed to humid currents from the Mediterranean and higher in altitude, located south-east in the Lillaz area. Among the most recent extreme events, to mention the flood of 2000, which hit Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta hard with particular intensity on the Cogne valley. 460 mm of rain fell between 13-16 October, the event had important repercussions on the municipal area. The landslide of Champlong, near Lillaz, where there was a profound transformation of the area's structure, was of considerable impact.
