Champdepraz

Champdepraz, a municipality of Franco-Provençal culture and language, was in the past affected by a Walser migratory flow, proof of which is the village of Gettaz-des-Allemands. According to the pronunciation of the Aosta Valley patois, the name "Champdepraz" must be pronounced omitting the final "z", therefore "Sciandöprà", as for many other toponyms and surnames of the Aosta Valley and of the neighboring regions (Savoy, Haute Savoie and Valais).

This peculiarity, which differs from the rules of pronunciation of the standard French language, dates back to a flourish that the editors of the registers of the kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia used to add at the end of the toponyms or names to pronounce as paroxitons, i.e. with the emphasis on the penultimate syllable, very common in Franco-Provençal. It should be noted that in this case it is however a truncated word, but the 'z' is not pronounced. Subsequently, this small sign was assimilated to a zeta, and is often mistakenly pronounced, both by Italian speakers and by French speakers.
