Challand Saint Anselme

The municipal territory of Challand-Saint-Anselme constituted an important part of the large and rich fiefdom that in the Middle Ages gave the name to the noble family of the Visconti of Aosta, who became Lords and then Counts of Challant on August 15, 1424. The parish was erected by the bishop of Aosta Pierre-François de Sales on 6 June 1746, placing it under the direct jurisdiction of the diocesan authority. Anselmo d'Aosta, also known as Canterbury, was chosen as patron saint, whose feast occurs on April 21st.

The Municipality was erected as an autonomous institution towards the end of the eighteenth century, but since 1754 the community council managed to stand autonomously, separated from the neighboring one of Saint-Victor with patent licenses. In 1928, with Royal Decree No. 1088 of April 26, 1928, which entered into force on May 31, the fascist government unified the two municipalities of Challant-Saint-Anselme and Challant-Saint-Victor into a single municipal entity, called Challant , with the capital Ville, the municipal seat in the municipality of the former municipality of Challand-Saint-Victor, creating great discontent in the population. In 1939, in deference to the paroxysmal Italianization of the topònimi, the name was changed in authority, as for 32 other Valle d'Aosta municipalities, in Villa Sant'Anselmo.

With the fall of fascism, the advent of the Resistance and of Liberation, the first decree of autonomy in the Valle d'Aosta was reached. The decree came into force on 1 January 1946. Thus the Municipality still reunited, took up the name of Challant. With the Decree of the Prime Minister of the Valle d'Aosta n.9469 / I of 12 September 1946, which entered into force on the following 20 September, the two municipalities of Challant-Saint-Anselme and Challant-Saint-Victor were fully reconstituted. . The current denomination (with the final "d") was decided by regional law 9 December 1976 n. 61, based on the oldest and most frequent spelling. It should be noted that the two toponyms "Challant" and "Challand" are homophones according to the rules of pronunciation of the French language.
