Ayas

The municipality of Ayas occupies the upper part of the homonymous valley at the foot of the great peaks belonging to the Pennine Alps, which mark the Italian-Swiss border, separating it from Zermatt, in the Mattertal (Canton of Valais). Among the most important peaks we must remember Monte Rosa in the valley represented by Castore (4,226 m), Polluce (4,091 m) and Breithorn (4,165 m) and which give rise, among other things, to the Great Verraz Glacier, main feeding basin of the Evançon torrent which runs through the Val d'Ayas and flows into the Dora Baltea.

Another important peak is the Zerbion, a pyramid-shaped mountain 2,720 m high which overlooks the town of Ayas and separates this municipality from that of Saint-Vincent. As far as flora is concerned, the Ayas landscape is dominated by various species of alpine flora, such as cranberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea), gentian (Gentiana kochiana) and anemone (Anemone vernalis). The trees that prevail in the woods are spruce (Picea excelsa), Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra) and larch (Larix decidua).

The fauna species that inhabit the Ayas territory are very varied. Marmots can be found in areas far from inhabited areas, squirrels and foxes in the woods and sometimes golden eagles in the skies. In addition, rivers and lakes are characterized by the presence of freshwater fish, such as marble trout.
