Aosta

The city of Aosta is located approximately in the middle of the Valle d'Aosta region, in the plain where the main river of the region flows: the Dora Baltea. Over Aosta dominate important mountains including the Becca di Nona, Monte Emilius, the Pointe de Chaligne and the Becca di Viou. The city is crossed from North to South, at the height of the Arch of Augustus, by the Buthier torrent, one of the numerous tributaries of the Dora Baltea.

Considering the provincial capitals, with 583 meters above sea level it is the fifth highest in Italy (after Campobasso and before Caltanissetta). Aosta is located in a valley completely surrounded by mountains. This causes a continental climate more tending to the alpine one. In fact, winters often last a long time, with very cold temperatures that can be prolonged until the beginning of the month of May. Summers, on the other hand, are short, but still very hot. In the months of December and January, the minimum temperatures are almost always well below zero and maximum values that normally slightly exceed zero.

A legend tells that in the year 1158 BC the city of Cordelia da Cordelo was founded, progenitor of the Salassi, descendant of Saturn and expedition companion of Hercules.
