Asti is an Italian town, the capital of the province of the same name in Piedmont, and the capital of ancient Astesana, today more commonly defined as Asti. It is the fourth largest municipality in the region by number of inhabitants and the sixth by surface. Roman "Municipium" known by the name of Hasta, was the seat of the Duchy of Asti, Lombard Duchy of Neustria. Free commune in the Middle Ages, with the right to "coin money", it was one of the most important commercial centers between the XII and XIII century, when its merchants developed trade and credit throughout Europe.
It is known all over the world for its wines, in particular Asti spumante: every year, in September, one of the most important wine competitions in Italy is held, called the Douja d'Or. Also famous is its historic Palio, one of the oldest manifestations in Italy, which takes place in September and culminates in a race of mounted horses (bareback).
In recent years the Festival delle astre festivals has also taken on considerable national importance, a food and wine event held in Asti the following week at the Palio di Asti, where over 40 pro loco of the province of Asti offer their gastronomic specialties, accompanied from Asti DOCG wines, in a large open-air restaurant, now a destination for thousands and thousands of people from all over Italy for the occasion.
