Scalea

Scalea is an Italian town in the province of Cosenza in Calabria. Over the years it has managed to become a popular tourist destination as well as one of the largest urban agglomerations of the Upper Tyrrhenian Cosentino.

The municipal area, quadrangular in shape, with its base greater than about 8 km lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea, has an inward depth of about 3 km and a total extension of 22.56 km². It borders San Nicola Arcella to the north, Santa Domenica Talao to the east, Orsomarso to the south, Santa Maria del Cedro to the south and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west. The town is located on a vast promontory, which delimits the Gulf of Policastro to the south.

The coast line is initially sandy and linear in the south, while in the north it has a jagged and rocky character with the presence of caves, produced by marine erosion. For half the extension, the land is flat (formed by the recent sediment of the Lao river which flows into the sea after having crossed the southern part of the territory for about 3 km). The other half is hilly in nature with a maximum height of 416 m above sea level.
