Crucoli Tower

Torretta di Crucoli, also called Torretta or Crucoli Torretta, is a fraction of the municipality of Crucoli (of which it forms the most inhabited nucleus) overlooking the Ionian Sea.

The first testimonies of Torretta date back to the Roman republican age, with archaeological finds from the 5th-8th centuries, which suggest that the town was the nucleus of the ancient settlement of Paternum along the consular road Traianea Jonica. In addition to numerous amphorae, terracotta manufactures and tombs, the remains of an imposing Roman villa with a spa were found in the immediate vicinity of Torretta. Later coins, walls and a water network from the Roman era were found.

The modern inhabited center of the hamlet was born at the beginning of the 1900s, with the development of tourism and the construction of the first condominiums in the waterfront area, as well as the Crucoli station on the Ionian railway. The culmination of tourism in Torretta was from the 1960s until the late 2000s.
