Bovalino

Bovalino is an Italian town in the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria in Calabria. In 2015 Bovalino was awarded the Green Flag of the Beaches, the authoritative European recognition awarded by the FEE.

Bovalino overlooks the Ionian coast and is one of the many landmarks of tourists who choose Calabria. The peculiarity of the area consists in the possibility of having sea and mountains just a few minutes away. The development of the beach and the crystalline sea is remarkable, extremely important for the mitigation of the Bovalinese climate. In addition to Bovalino Marina there is Bovalino Superiore, at a height of about 200 meters above sea level, an ancient village that presents the historical-architectural testimonies of the country of origin.

The origins of Bovalino are not very clear: many scholars trace its foundation back to Roman times, identifying it with various coastal centers of uncertain location, such as Altanum (a Roman post station) or the oldest Uriah, military outpost of the Greek colony of Locri Epizefiri. An important reference of this period is the inscription, in Greek language, placed on a corner of the castle of Bovalino Superiore, probably used as waste material during the renovation of the manor in the 16th century, where, according to experts, reference would be made to CORNELIOS PUBLIUS, a Roman-age quadriumvir who must have owned a villa in the Balkan territory.
