Botricello

Botricello is an Italian town of 5,245 inhabitants in the province of Catanzaro. Town located in the Gulf of Squillace, it became autonomous in 1957, after having been part of the nearby town of Andali for years. It does not boast a long historical tradition, but the beautiful beaches and a particularly mild climate have given a significant boost to seaside tourism which is its main economic resource.

The town has two sites, upper Botricello (or Soprano) which forms the ancient nucleus and is located inland on the hills, and Botricello (new), near the coast, which instead developed from the second post-war period on the edge of Highway 106 Jonica. The new country in recent decades has undergone a strong demographic increase. According to some sources, the name derives from the Greek, "bothros" (ditch) with the addition of the suffix -icellu.

The town has an archaeological site in the area near the sea: it is a late-ancient necropolis, similar to that of Roccelletta, whose excavations were carried out between 1967 and 1968. From the numerous tombs with brick or pebble walls kits rich in very thin jars and glass were recovered. Next to the necropolis a small basilica was found in a very bad state of conservation.
