Sibari

Sibari is a fraction of the municipality of Cassano all'Ionio in Calabria. It was one of the most important cities (poleis) of Magna Grecia on the Ionian Sea, overlooking the Gulf of Taranto, between the rivers Crati (Crathis) and Coscile (Sybaris), gathered about 5 km from the sea but with independent foci. The citadel is based on a mainly tourist economy.

Sybaris was founded between two rivers, the Crati and the Sybaris, at the end of the 8th century BC. by a group of Achaeans from the Peloponnese. Sibari developed rapidly thanks to the fertility of its territory where oil, wheat and fruit were grown. According to Strabo, Sìbari was founded by Is of Elice. The city ruled over four tribes and 25 cities. At the end of the 6th century BC she was shaken by various political events and, when she was headed by Telys, many aristocrats were forced to flee. At Telys' request to hand over the Sybarite exiles, the Crotonians refused; the Sybarites, therefore, began the war with Crotone.

In 510 BC, after a 70-day war, the Crotoniati who with 100,000 men filled a circuit of 50 stadiums (about 9 km), led by the multi-Olympic champion Milone, conquered the city, diverted the river and submerged it. In 444 -443 BC there was the Panhellenic foundation of Thurii, named after a nearby source. Later Thurii was subjugated by the Lucanians. The city lost importance and in 193 BC the Romans built a colony there, to which they gave the name Copia. In 84 BC it was transformed into a town hall and in the imperial period, between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD, it developed again. During the fifth and sixth centuries it began to decline due to the swamping of the area. A century later the area was completely abandoned.
