Montescaglioso

Montescaglioso is an Italian town in the province of Matera in Basilicata. Important historical-cultural center, it is known as the "city of monasteries" for the presence of four monastic complexes, among which the abbey of San Michele Arcangelo stands out.

The territory of Montescaglioso, as well as that of Matera, falls within an archaeological, historical and natural area, the Murgia Materana park, which includes about 8000 hectares of which about 3500 belong to the Montese municipality.

On a cultural level it is worth mentioning the Carnival, one of the most important in the region, whose first official attestation dates back to 7 February 1638 as well as the religious and devotional cult towards the patron saint of the town Rocco di Montpellier, whose patronage dates back to 1684.
