Rionero in Vulture, generally called Rionero, is an Italian town in the province of Potenza in Basilicata. Located on the slopes of Monte Vulture, it was awarded the silver medal for civil merit for acts of self-denial during the Second World War. The city is also known in Italy for its wealth of mineral waters, the sector in which the Fonti del Vulture company operates, which bottles, among others, the Lilia and Sveva waters.
Rionero in Vulture is also home to the CROB, a center on cancer research of national importance. It is located on two hills southeast of Monte Vulture, near the border with Campania and Puglia, at 676 meters above sea level. Its territory extends for 53.1 km² and its inhabitants are divided between the inhabited center and the hamlets of Monticchio Bagni and Monticchio Sgarroni. Here there are two lakes of volcanic origin.
The origins of the name of this town are not entirely clear. According to some, its etymology derives from "Rivo Nigro" (black stream), source emerging from the volcanic tuff (pozzolanic) of black color that crosses the town dividing it in two parts (source now incorporated in the fountain called "Grande" or "Baronessa" "). After the unification of Italy, the suffix in Vulture was added to Rionero to distinguish it from the homonymous Rionero Sannitico, in Molise.
