Lavello

Lavello is an Italian town in the province of Potenza in Basilicata. Located in Vulture-Melfese, a north-eastern area of Basilicata nestled between Puglia, Campania and Potentino, it is the sixth municipality in the region by population, as well as the third in the province.

The municipality is located in the middle valley of the Ofanto river, at the northern end of the region. The original nucleus was built on a steep-walled hill, carved by the high branches of the Crapelotto torrent (right tributary of the Ofanto). Subsequently, the center expanded considerably, with a checkerboard structure, on the axis of the Appulo-Lucana state road.

The built-up area of Lavello has very ancient origins as evidenced by the discovery of some remains of an iron age village. It originates from the Dauno-Roman agglomeration of Forentum. The toponym probably derives from the Latin word labellum, used to indicate the drinking trough for cattle. In fact, the town stands halfway between the Apulian plains and the green pastures of the Vulture, along the sheep tracks of the transhumance that connect the areas inside the Tavoliere. Location plays a key role in the development of the country. It is already an important inhabited center at the time of the Lombards and here, in 839, Riccardo, Duke of Benevento was killed.
