Francavilla al mare

Francavilla al Mare is an Italian town in the province of Chieti. Ninth town of Abruzzo for number of inhabitants and important seaside resort, it is located south of Pescara, with which it borders and forms a single urban agglomeration.

It is part of the central-Abruzzo metropolitan area which exceeds 350,000 inhabitants, in an area with high population density. It extends over a low hilly and coastal territory, and this territorial conformation allows the presence of different panoramic points, from which you can observe the town and the coast, from where the so-called Costa dei Trabocchi begins towards the south. The city has a rich past, as evidenced by archaeological finds dating back to the prehistoric and protohistoric, Italic, Frentano and Roman periods; moreover it was, from 1281, seat of a port and from 1307 of an important fair. In 2014 the city was awarded the Blue Flag.

Francavilla al Mare is located on the Adriatic coast, on the border with the Province of Pescara. The territory of Francavilla al Mare has an extension of 23.09 km² and is an integral part of the Costa dei Trabocchi, crossed by the river Foro and marks the southern border with Ortona. The municipal territory is purely coastal, in fact the Town Hall is located only 3 meters above sea level. The municipality borders Pescara to the north, Ortona to the south and Chieti to the west. The municipal territory is located, according to the seismic classification of the Civil Protection, in zone 3 (low seismicity).
