Lanciano

Lanciano is an Italian town in the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo, the most important center of the Val di Sangro and a destination for pilgrimages thanks to its Eucharistic miracle. A city of ancient tradition, it was the capital of the Frentani, a Roman municipality and subsequently the district capital during the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, it had the title of city in 1212 at the behest of Frederick II of Swabia. It is also awarded a gold medal for military valor.

The territory of the municipality of Lanciano extends for 66 km² in the hilly belt that slopes down from the slopes of the Maiella towards the sea. It is mainly composed of hills, but also includes an important flat part in the Val di Sangro. Its altitude varies from 33 m a.s.l., in the Serre district near the Sangro river, up to 410 m a.s.l., which can be reached in the hamlet of San Nicolino on the border with Castel Frentano. The city center is located at 265 m a.s.l. (taken in Piazza del Plebiscito, in front of the Town Hall).

Based on the 30-year reference average of 1961-1990, the average temperature of the coldest month, January, stands at +6.2 ° C; that of the hottest months, July and August, is +24.2 ° C. The snow falls every year on average 2-3 times, in some cases even in late autumn or early spring; in summer, especially in July and August, the days of heat are not uncommon.
