The Mackenzie Castle in Genoa is a manor house located in the residential district of Castelletto, near Piazza Manin and the Casella train station, 100 meters above sea level.
Censored as a space for culture on the occasion of Genoa European capital of culture 2004, in autumn 2006 it was one of the venues of the Science Festival.
The Mackenzie castle has been defined as a whim by the King and is considered one of the most successful examples of the architectural taste in use at the end of the nineteenth century, aimed at recovering the suggestions of the Middle Ages (of which the nearby castle of Albertis is a further example), with references to the Gothic style and mannerism.
Built on a pre-existing rustic villa, built in turn on the Genoa Walls of the sixteenth century (the perimeter walls of this villa, reused in the renovation, are visible in the external perimeter), it was erected between 1893 and 1905 on a project by Gino Coppedè (at the time still little known architect) who was commissioned by the insurer from Florence Evan Mackenzie, whose family lived there for twenty-seven years, or until his death.
In this building, Coppedè creates his own particular version of the typology of the castle villa, with an eclectic taste, composing a vast multiplicity of historical references - the medieval castle, the Palazzo della Signoria in Florence, etc. - and for the realization of him it is the fruit of the experience of the "Art Workshop", his father's laboratory in Florence.
Thus they work in Castello Mackenzie, in a team with the architect, various craftsmen, sculptors, blacksmiths, painters (his brother Giorgio Coppedè), etc.
