San Marco Castle

Ignazio Sebastiano Gravina Cruyllas, Prince of Palagonia, continuing with more energy than his father had undertaken, proceeds with the work of reorganizing the economy of the fiefdom and its infrastructure. And it is within the framework of this program that in 1689 he undertook the construction of a new residence on the Calatabiano beach where there is a source of water from which the name given to the district of "Acquicella" derives.

With a deed of January 30, 1689, the masters Francesco Liuzzu, Giannetto di Leonardo, Mario Panebianco and Giovanni Arcidiacono di Acireale commit themselves with the Prince of Palagonia, Ignazio Sebastiano Gravina Cruyllas, to the construction of the Acquicella warehouse and the construction of a residence for the Prince himself. The Flavetta Masters of Acireale are commissioned to carry out the lava stone carvings of the warehouse and residence.

The complex of buildings at the Acquicella airport does not suffer significant damage in the earthquake of 9 and 11 January 1693, of which no mention is made in the appraisal report of November of the same year. New ones are added to the existing buildings by Ferdinando Francesco Gravina, who succeeded his father in 1694. In 1697 the Church of S. Antonio da Padova was built which still exists on the side of the cottage.
