Abbazia Santa Maria del Bosco

The Abbey of Santa Maria del Bosco di Calatamauro, located at the foot of Mount Genuardo, in the Giuliana, Bisacquino, Contessa Entellina triangle, belongs to the second generation of the Benedictine monasteries of Sicily, that is, following the foundation of the Norman monasteries (S. Salvatore di Patti , S. Nicolò l'Arena, S.Maria di Licodia, S. Giovanni degli eremiti in Palermo).

It was born, almost spontaneously, in an entirely new political context, such as the post Vespers, full of ideal and spiritual ferments, rooted in the island thanks to the anti-papal policy of Frederick III of Aragon, which brought the Swabian idea to its extreme -ghibelline of an autonomous kingdom of Sicily. The origins of Santa Maria del Bosco are in fact part of that vast hermit-pauperistic movement that has affected Italy and Europe since the thirteenth century. Wandering hermits, poor accused of heresy, called Fraticelli, Tuscan Spirituals, who also fled to Sicily, suffered the condemnation of John XXII and the inquisition of the bishops.

A group of hermits of different origins settled in the early 14th century at the foot of Monte Genuardo, in the so-called Calatamauro wood, named after the nearby Byzantine-Arab castle. However they were investigated by the bishop of Agrigento Bertoldo de Labro and, despite being found immune from heresy, they were advised to embrace a rule recognized by the church. The hermits of the Calatamauro forest thus chose the Benedictine rule, as per deed drawn up by the notary Guglielmo da Nocera on 20 March 1318.
