Tafuri Castle

Tafuri Castle, dating back to 1935, is located on a rocky ridge on the south-eastern coast of Sicily, in front of the island of Capo Passero (SR); it stands out on a blue and crystalline sea and has been the symbol of this small fishing center for many years, now a destination for tourists and surfers. The history of the castle has been reconstructed for a good part.

The client Franzo Bruno di Belmonte entrusts the construction of a villa in the form of a castle to the Florentine architect Crott. Severino Crott (Castiglion Fiorentino, 1886-1972), known for numerous expansions in style of religious buildings in Tuscany, works for the first and only time in Sicily right on the Castle. He drafted the project in 1933 and in 1935 work began. It is not known exactly when they will be suspended, due to likely economic problems.

Certainly the castle will remain incomplete until 1957, when it will be purchased by the Tafuri family. It will be completed and transformed into a hotel structure since 1964. It will be expanded in 1971-72. In 1986 it will be leased to third parties who will keep it until 1998, the year of the definitive closure.
