Castel Savoia is an eclectic nineteenth-century villa located in Gressoney-Saint-Jean, in the Aosta Valley. Following some holiday stays spent from 1889 by Queen Margherita and her consort Umberto I at the residence of Baron Beck Peccoz, the queen wanted to build a residence for herself on the side of the valley below Col Ranzola, from which you can enjoy a wide panorama of the valley and the peaks of Monte Rosa.
After some resistance from Umberto I, who preferred to stay in the Castle of Sarre for long hunting trips, Queen Margherita obtained permission to build her holiday home which she had designed by the architect Emilio Stramucci, already working on the remodeling of the Royal Palace and other Savoy residences. The foundation stone was laid in the summer of 1899 but King Umberto I never stayed in the castle since he was assassinated in Monza in 1900 by the anarchist Gaetano Bresci, before the completion of the works in 1904.
Queen Margherita, widow and now relegated to the sole function of queen mother, spent long holiday periods there until 1925, hosting illustrious members of the literature she loved to surround herself with, including the poet Giosuè Carducci and the affectionate nephew, the young prince of Piedmont Umberto II.
