Rocchetta Mattei

La Rocchetta Mattei is a fortress located on the northern Apennines, on a hill at 407 meters above sea level, in Savignano in the municipality of Grizzana Morandi, on the state road nº 64 Porrettana, in the metropolitan city of Bologna. Built in the second half of the 19th century, it eclectically mixes different styles, from medieval to Moorish.

La Rocchetta was the home of Count Cesare Mattei, self-taught scholar, politician and doctor, founder of electromeopathy, a practice founded on homeopathy. On November 5, 1850 the first stone of the Rocchetta was laid and already in 1859 it was considered habitable, so much so that Cesare Mattei no longer moved away. Inside the Rocchetta the count leads a life as a medieval castle man and even creates a courtyard, complete with a buffoon. The castle was home to illustrious personalities who came from all over to undergo the care of Mattei, it seems that even guests of the Rocchetta were Ludwig III of Bavaria and Tsar Alexander II. In 1925 it was officially visited by the Prince of Piedmont.

Even Dostoevskji mentions the Count in The Karamazov brothers, when he tells the devil that he managed to recover from terrible rheumatism thanks to a book and drops of Count Mattei.
