Documents from the 9th century (Liber Pontificalis) define Frascati as a small urban agglomeration, but after the destruction of Tusculum (Tusculum) in 1191, the resident population increased and the seat of the diocese passed from Tusculum to Frascati.
The name of the city derives perhaps from a local tradition in the use of the "branches" as timber or from the use of the same to build makeshift shelters after the destruction of Tusculum.
The most significant archaeological finds date back to Roman times and belong to the patrician villa of Lucullus (117 BC - 57 BC) and then to the imperial dynasty of the Flavians (69 AD - 96 AD).
